Join us on Friday, May 19, from 5:00PM (registration begins at 4:30PM) to 9:30PM. for the annual Buffalo State English Education Spring Banquet at Pearl Street Brewery. 

The Buffalo State English Education Student Association (EESA) will recognize Mr. Scott Reimann, winner of the 2023 English Education Community Award. This award recognizes a member of Buffalo State's English Education extended community who has supported, worked to sustain, or advocated for our various program initiatives. Mr. Reimann is a co-founder of The Western New York Network of English Teachers (WNYNET) and the current Business Official for the organization. He has worked tirelessly to grow the non-profit to support English language arts teaching and teachers across the Buffalo Niagara region. Scott is also a professor in the College Writing Program at Buffalo State and at Bryant and Stratton.

EESA will also recognize Darla Schultz-Bubar, winner of the 2023 Inspirational Teacher Award, which recognizes an English teacher who has demonstrated a commitment to Buffalo State English Education students and whose work inspires teacher candidates. Darla is an ELA teacher at Edwardtown Middle School in the Niagara Wheatfield School District. She has worked with Buffalo State English teacher candidates for many years, serving as a mentor teacher and opening her classroom for observations. She serves as the Niagara Wheatfield Union President and has developed innovative project-based writing workshop classes for her middle school students.

Melissa Meola Shanahan, '09, '14, will be presented the 2023 English Education Alumni Award, which recognizes a graduate whose work serves as an inspiration and model for teacher candidates in the program. Melissa is an English teacher at Lafayette International High School in the Buffalo Public Schools and the associate director and co-founder of Torn Space Theater. She is a doctoral candidate at the University at Buffalo and will graduate in May of 2023. She works as a mentor teacher for Buffalo State English language arts teacher candidates and is the creator of the “Agents of Change” project, an inquiry and arts community project focused on building student community agency.

The Western New York Network of English Teachers will present the annual WNYNET English Teaching Awards to the following educators:

  • Michael Gunsolos, Lockport High School, Early Career Teacher Award
  • Brandy Kinney, Salamanca City School District, Experienced Teacher Award
  • Diane Meaney, West Seneca West Senior High School, Lifetime Achievement Award
  • Jason Marchioli, Principal, West Seneca East Middle School, Administrator of the Year Award
