English Education Program Banquet 2022

Join us on Friday, May 20, from 5:00 (registration begins at 4:30) to 9:30 p.m. for the annual Buffalo State English Education Spring Banquet at Pearl Street Brewery.

The Buffalo State English Education Student Association (EESA) will recognize Dr. Jevon Hunter, winner of the 2021 English Education Community Award. This award recognizes a member of Buffalo State's English Education extended community who has supported, worked to sustain, or advocated for our various program initiatives. We will also recognize Dr. Hunter's efforts to better the lives of teachers and young people in Western New York through his work as a professor in the Elementary Education, Literacy, and Educational Leadership Department and as the Woods-Beales Endowed Chair of Urban Education. Dr. Hunter will present the keynote talk: "How to be a Dope AF Classroom Teacher (and other Pedagogical Lessons as Told by Buffalo's Black Youth)."

EESA will also recognize Deborah Bertlesman, winner of the 2022 Inspirational Teacher Award, which recognizes an English teacher who has demonstrated a commitment to Buffalo State English Education students and whose work inspires teacher candidates. Deborah is an ELA teacher at Olmsted High School. She has worked with Buffalo State English teacher candidates for many years, serving as a mentor teacher and opening her classroom for observations. She is a lead officer for the Western New York Network of English Teachers, serving as president. Deb has presented nationally at NCTE and is working on completing her doctorate in English education at the University at Buffalo.

Dr. Pauline Skowron Schmidt, BS '95, will be presented the 2022 English Education Alumni Award, which recognizes a graduate whose work serves as an inspiration and model for teacher candidates in the program. Pauline was an English teacher in the Holland Central school before completing her Ph.D. and moving to higher education. She was an assistant professor in the Department of Education at D'Youville for five years and is currently an associate professor at West Chester University (WCU).
