Topic Overview: What is nanotechnology? Nanotechnology is defined as the manipulation of matter with at least one dimension sized from 1 to 100 nanometers. With the tremendous impact of the world of "nano" already in flux and with much more to occur in the present decade, it is imperative that a holistic approach be taken to tackle this disruptive space–in understanding not only the science and engineering of a given technology, but assessing the economic success of such a technology, and judging the ethical, legal, and social implications of it as well. This is exactly the vision of the Center for Integrated Studies in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology on Buffalo State University campus.

The presentation will focus on original research just published titled 'An Integrated Assessment of Next Generation PV Technologies'. This success milestone had brought together students and faculty across disparate disciplines including Mathematics, Data Science, Engineering Technology and Chemistry.

Speaker Bio: Dr. Saquib Ahmed has been part of the Engineering Technology team since 2018. In 2022, he became Founder and Director of the Center for Integrated Studies in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology (CISNN), bringing together a well-rounded team of research faculty from engineering, technology, data science, physics, chemistry, economics, and law/ethics. Dr. Ahmed has strategically executed successful projects and industry partnerships to ensure that partnerships are formed; current students can take advantage of these partnerships.

Dr. Ahmed has developed new courses: ‘Nanoscale Science, Engineering, and Implications’ (undergraduate) and ‘Machine Learning for Materials Science in Clean Energy’ (graduate). Working with many researchers to complete projects. He has published 23 articles in major journals with more to come. Dr. Ahmed and his students have also presented their research at several national and international conferences, as well research fairs within BSU. In 2021, he was awarded the SUNY Buffalo State President’s Award for Excellence in Research, Scholarship, and Creativity. He serves on the National Science Foundation (NSF)’s panel as a reviewer. Dr. Ahmed was also featured on the Department of Education’s Newsroom in Summer 2022 for his research accomplishments. His volunteer activities include Buffalo United for Peace, Tent of Abraham, and the Erie County Executive’s Office to promote peace, inclusivity and understanding. Dr. Ahmed volunteers for various charity organizations and works with BSU’s Meals on Wheels team.
