Buffalo State Alumnus, Lazarus Lynch ’16 wins Food Network’s Chopped Star Power Tournament

Lazarus Lynch is a 23-year old Chef, Food Network Host, Multi-Artist, and the face behind the popular brand, Son of a Southern Chef. Born and raised in New York City, Lazarus stepped into the kitchen at an early age under the tutelage of his father, Johnny Ray Lynch, a southern chef from Bessemer, Alabama.

Lazarus came to Buffalo State College in 2012, earning his Bachelor’s Degree in Individualized Studies in 2016. His coursework covered a wide range of disciplines including business, communication, writing, media production, public relations, and dietetics and nutrition. In his freshman year, he studied theater and conflict resolution abroad in Kigali, Rwanda with the Anne Frank Project.

In the four preliminary rounds of the Chopped Star Power Tournament, Lazarus competed against 15 other stars from the web, sports, comedy and Hollywood. He came back to win the grand finale on April 25, 2017, taking the title and $50,000 for his charity, the National 4-H Council.

In the appetizer round of the finale, Lazarus prepared poached lobster over salad greens. For the entrée, he created a barbecue stew with bitter melon, and for dessert, he served a soursop skillet cake with caramel sauce.

The Buffalo State community is proud of Lazarus Lynch and all that he has achieved. We know that we will continue to see great things from this amazing talent.
