Buffalo State campus exhibit to feature more than 50 celebrated alumni artists

Alumni Artists exhibit is on view January 29–February 15, 2018, and will feature works from more than 50 artists including Rita Argen Auerbach, Robert Longo, Joseph Piccillo, and Cindy Sherman.

Buffalo State Alumni Artists: Works from the Gerald Mead Collection will highlight the work of more than 50 alumni and former students and include all art media taught at the college. The exhibit, which is free and open to the public, is on view Monday, January 29–Thursday, February 15, in the Czurles-Nelson Gallery in Upton Hall.

The collection will present a unique cross-section of alumni spanning seven decades (1950s–present), including work from Rita Argen Auerbach, Robert Longo, Joseph Piccillo, and Cindy Sherman.

Alumni, faculty, staff, students, and the public are invited to a reception for the exhibit in the Czurles-Nelson Gallery on Tuesday, February 13. The event is free to attend but advance registration is encouraged.

“Alumni Artists will showcase the broad range of the art and craft disciplines represented at Buffalo State—including painting, drawing, printmaking, photography, sculpture, graphic design, fiber, wood, ceramic, and metal," said Gerald Mead, B.A. ’85, B.S. ’86, who is an independent curator, artist, and lecturer in the Art and Design Department. “Many of the artists have significantly impacted Western New York through their involvement with artist-run gallery spaces, art organizations, and educational institutions.”

The exhibit will showcase the diverse and distinct nature of Buffalo State's art and design programs.

“The 50-plus featured artists have all achieved international, national, or significant regional reputations,” Mead said. “Their work is represented in major museum collections across the world—from the Smithsonian to the Vatican.”

The gallery is open Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
